HCCSA Named Texas Football’s “Army Strong Team of the Week”
“Local football team’s big upset win lands it in state-wide spotlight. ”
During Hill Country Christian School of Austin’s (HCCSA) football game last Friday night, September 12th, football coach, Philip Hudgens, was approached by a representative of the U.S. Army who partnering with Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine named HCCSA’s football team as the private school “Army Strong Team of the Week.”

These representatives scour the state of Texas weekly to find schools with big wins. HCCSA’s upset over Dallas Covenant, a 45 point favorite, last week fit the bill with the final score being Hill Country Christian School of Austin 65, Dallas Covenant 20. The game ended halfway into the third quarter when AJ Sanchez of Hill Country recovered a fumble and returned it for the final game ending touchdown. This unexpected victory landed Hill Country Christian school with the honor of private school “Army Strong Team of the Week” and with new energy for the rest of their season. Coach Hudgens remarked that “the guys really worked hard last week, with some excellent practices. It’s our desire to continue to play with that kind of enthusiasm and ferocity for the remainder of the season. If we do, who knows how far we’ll go?”
Brad Hilliard of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine commented that the role the team’s coaches and supporters play in shaping the lives of young men beyond the football field by teaching them teamwork, physical, mental and emotional strength will instill in them the same qualities that soldiers with the U.S. Army call upon to achieve success not just in training and in battle, but in life.
A U.S. Army representative will visit Hill Country Christian School of Austin to present the football team, the coaching staff and supporters with a commemorative plaque signifying their achievement. In addition, these student-athletes and their supporters will be invited to this year’s U.S. Army All-American Bowl at the Alamodome in San Antonio on Saturday, January 3, 2009.
