Fish, Levers, Pulleys, and Shakespeare:
Hill Country Christian School of Austin 4th and 5th Graders Take On the D.I. Challenge
Hill Country Christian School of Austin proudly announces its participation in Destination Imagination (DI). Destination Imagination Teams often face unique challenges to solve. DI teams could very likely choose to create a machine using levers and pulleys to gather fish while quoting or acting out Shakespeare or an interesting combination thereof. The team members make all the challenge decisions with parent coaches offering minimal input in the process. Students will be challenged to use creative and critical thinking, develop teamwork, collaboration and leadership skills while improving research and inquiry skills where both creative exploration and attention to detail count.
Mrs. Melanie Cravey, faculty advisor and member of the Capital Area DI Board of Directors says “In bringing the DI program experience to Hill Country, I sought an opportunity to expand our school’s non-athletic extracurricular offerings with a program that encourages critical thinking, creativity and thinking outside the box skills that are complementary to our schools’ classical orientation.” She wasn’t prepared for the enthusiastic response. Out of 101 4th and 5th graders at Hill Country 21 have volunteered to be on DI Teams representing the school this February in regional DI competitions.
Terri Alvarez, Capital Area DI Director said, “I am so thrilled Hill Country’s pilot year has had such and overwhelming response. I look forward to partnering with Mrs. Cravey as the teams prepare for our regional competition in February.”
Destination Imagination is a community-based, non-profit, volunteer-driven educational organization that teaches young people from Kindergarten through University-level the critical and creative thinking skills needed for success in the 21st Century.
